Taylor Engineers has earned its place as Bay Area experts in mechanical, plumbing and control system designs. What is especially unique to our firm is a longstanding commitment to advancing the industry at large from a global perspective. We have written the energy and indoor air quality codes and standards engineers work with every day. We provide design guides and tools, teach via tutorials and presentations, write articles for publication and deliver educational seminars, forums and continuing education courses.

Leadership
Collaborator with UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley Lab on a debunking a white paper posted on the ASHRAE TC9.9 website entitled “Gaseous and Particulate Contamination Guidelines for Data Centers”.
Authors of a white paper evaluating the role HVAC systems play in mitigating the transmission of COVID-19 based on the latest research and recommendations from health organizations and ASHRAE.
SENSOR (Saving Energy Nationwide in Structure with Occupancy Recognition)
Co-Principal Investigators for a project funded by ARPA-E through its program to develop protocols for evaluating the accuracy and energy saving potential of advanced human presence technologies in commercial and residential applications. Simulations of office buildings show the potential for 20-45% HVAC energy savings with the use of occupancy-based controls.
Conceived and developed of the Universal Translator software for alignment and analysis of data from data loggers and EMCS.
Principal Investigators for a project to develop best-in-class sequences of controls for central chilled water and hot water plants.
Co-Principal Investigators for a project to automate and field test demand control ventilation control sequences that dynamically meet Standard 62.1 ventilation rates with minimal energy use.
Participation in PIER funded research that developed underfloor air distribution system models for EnergyPlus.
Collaborators on an EPIC-funded project which aimed to improve understanding of design and application of high thermal mass radiant systems. Taylor Engineering led a detailed study resulting in the paper entitled “Comparison of Construction and Energy Costs for Radiant vs. VAV Systems in the California Bay Area”.
Automated Fault Detection and Diagnostic Systems
Participation in several PIER funded research project on automated fault detection and diagnostic systems. One of these systems is currently available from three EMCS vendors. A case study on its implementation was written by Taylor Engineering.
Advanced VAV System Design Guide
Principal Investigators for the Large Building Systems element of the PIER funded Integrated Energy Systems – Productivity and Building Science project. This project resulted in new simulation models, energy code requirements and the Advanced VAV System Design Guide.
Principal Investigators in ASHRAE RP 1455, a project to develop state-of-the-art sequences for air-handling units and zone controls including compliance with Standards 90.1, 62.1, 55 and AFDD.
Participated in the team that developed DOE’s DC Pro suite of tools for the evaluation of data centers.
Research on VAV Box Damper Controls
Principal Investigators for research on VAV box damper controls funded by PIER and PG&E. This ongoing research is targeted to change both VAV box rating procedures and energy codes.
Collaborators on a project funded by PIER which studied innovative low-energy, occupant-responsive HVAC controls. Developments from Taylor Engineering’s efforts included advanced control sequences for time-averaged ventilation and cost-responsive supply air temperature reset. As part of this study, evaluation of a gas-fired hot water heating system found that only 17% of the heating energy cost was delivered to the spaces as useful heat. The remainder of the gas input to the boilers was wasted due to plant inefficiencies and losses in the hot water distribution system.
Co-Principal Investigators for a PIER-funded effort to demonstrate cost-effective technologies to reduce natural gas consumption in large commercial buildings. Project includes field demonstrations, laboratory testing, data collection and analysis from a wide range of operating buildings, and development of a design guide and other resources for market transformation.
Principal Investigators for the CEC-funded project which aimed to enhance and accelerate market adoption of ASHRAE Guideline 36 High Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems using demonstration projects, design guides, and other related research activities. The project documented an average of 31% HVAC energy savings in simulations across a wide range of baseline conditions and achieved savings of up to 60% in field demonstrations.
