NDA 7 Data Center

Santa Clara, California

NDA 7 is a 30 MW co-location data center in Santa Clara California that was built in 2015. The primary cooling source for 2/3rd of the data halls is custom DX rooftop units with airside economizers and direct evaporative cooling/humidification. From Day 1 the data center has suffered from poor energy efficiency, and poor reliability, including compressor trips and compressor burnouts. We re-wrote all the control sequences including the compressor controls. The upgrade reduced the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) from 1.50 to 1.30, resulting in energy savings over $1 million annually. Temperature and humidity control has improved, and compressor failures have been eliminated. The other data halls and the electrical rooms are served by a chilled water plant with a waterside economizer that has never operated. We are currently rewriting the plant sequences, including the water economizer and will be commissioning them in the next few months. Our models predict a 45% reduction in plant energy.
