Broad Center Laboratory

Pasadena, California

The Broad Center at Caltech houses the Division of Biology and Biological Engineering. Taylor Engineers performed retro-commissioning services, including site investigations, functional testing and a calibration simulation model to identify and evaluate energy efficiency opportunities. This initial work subsequently led to major HVAC design efforts to rebalance lab airflow and update the controls, as well as a lab exhaust stack momentum analysis to eliminate lab exhaust bypass air. Services included measurement and verification as well as utility rebate support. The retro-commissioning energy savings exceeded $300,000 annually with less than a 5-year payback period.

The building is primarily served by variable air volume air handlers with tracking air valves and reheat terminals at the zones. The systems run 24/7 with 100% outside air. Chilled water and steam are provided by the campus central plant.

After the retro-commissioning project a basement vivarium VAV retrofit was designed and commissioning by Taylor Engineers. The retrofit included HVAC and controls.
